AMS establishes an AI advisory group for the mathematical community

The AMS response developed during the first year of widespread generative-AI use. A Notices article records that the Society had already amended its Ethical Guidelines and Journal Policies in June 2023 to adopt the COPE position that AI tools cannot be authors and AI use must be disclosed.

What happened?

AMS President Bryna Kra authorized the Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence and the Mathematical Community on 10 July 2023. Its charge covered the role of mathematics in AI development and deployment, AI's impact on mathematical research, use of AI in publications, education and research, and effects on the mathematical community. The group later produced an AMS White Paper on AI and committee-specific papers, including a January 2024 paper on publishing in mathematics that examined peer review, research integrity, copyright, training data and attribution.

The AMS response developed during the first year of widespread generative-AI use. A Notices article records that the Society had already amended its Ethical Guidelines and Journal Policies in June 2023 to adopt the COPE position that AI tools cannot be authors and AI use must be disclosed. The July advisory group then broadened the response from immediate journal rules to sustained governance questions for mathematical research and the profession. Its 2024 white papers were explicitly intended as living resources for AMS policy committees and the wider community.

Why it matters

This event marks an early transition from generic publisher responses to AI toward mathematics-specific institutional governance. It put research practice, publication, attribution, education and community effects into one formal agenda, creating a documented predecessor to later community-wide efforts such as the Leiden Declaration.

Significance rationale: The American Mathematical Society's 2023 Advisory Group on Artificial Intelligence and the Mathematical Community is a field-building milestone because it created a formal society-level mechanism specifically for AI's effects on mathematical research, publication, education and the profession. The group subsequently produced policy-oriented white papers on publishing, professional practice, education, equity and science policy, showing institutional follow-through rather than a temporary discussion response.

AI contribution
This Event records mathematical-community governance of AI use rather than an AI system performing mathematical work, so an operative AI role is not applicable.
Human contribution
AMS leadership, advisory-group members and policy committees defined the governance agenda, consulted the community, drafted committee-specific white papers and developed publication and professional guidance for mathematicians.
