Wen-Tsun Wu validates the algebraic method that becomes Wu's method for automated geometry theorem proving

The method algebraizes elementary geometry: geometric configurations are encoded as polynomial equations and theorem proving is reduced to symbolic polynomial reasoning.

What happened?

Retrospective Chinese Academy of Sciences accounts record that on Lunar New Year's Day in 1977, after several months of hand calculation, Wen-Tsun Wu first successfully verified the feasibility of his mechanical method for proving elementary-geometry theorems. An official 1977 holiday record independently fixes that Lunar New Year's Day to 18 February 1977. Wu published the foundational Chinese paper later that year in Scientia Sinica, volume 20, issue 6, pages 507-516; the English version appeared in 1978.

The method algebraizes elementary geometry: geometric configurations are encoded as polynomial equations and theorem proving is reduced to symbolic polynomial reasoning. Wu developed the route from Ritt-style characteristic-set ideas and constructive elimination, enabling mechanical proof procedures and explicit treatment of degenerate cases. Later computer implementations proved non-trivial geometry theorems and helped establish algebraic automated deduction in geometry as a durable research program.

Why it matters

The event supplies a missing bridge in the Chronicle between Gelernter's earlier heuristic Geometry Theorem Machine and later mature symbolic-algebra approaches to automated deduction. It also illustrates an important historical form of AI4Math in which the central innovation was not a learned model but a mathematically designed algorithm that made a class of proof tasks mechanically executable.

Significance rationale: Wu's method shifted automated geometry theorem proving from predominantly heuristic search toward an algebraic, algorithmic route: geometric hypotheses and conclusions are translated into polynomial conditions and treated with characteristic-set and elimination techniques. CADE later recognized Wu's work as groundbreaking, and its Herbrand Award record describes the method as a breakthrough that revitalized automated geometry theorem proving.

AI contribution
The central contribution was a human-designed algorithm for mechanical reasoning. Wu first validated the procedure by hand; later implementations executed the algebraic proof procedure on computers. This record does not attribute mathematical discovery to an autonomous AI system.
Human contribution
Wen-Tsun Wu formulated the algebraization strategy, developed the constructive polynomial machinery, manually tested the method, and subsequently led its computer implementation and broader mathematics-mechanization program.
