The challenge supplied common Mizar-derived problems, public rules and a total resource budget intended to make learning, premise selection and other large-theory reasoning strategies directly comparable.
The official MPTP Challenge page records accumulated results on 16 July 2007 for 252 large-theory problems, under rules that explicitly allowed systems to retune and learn during execution.
It helped establish large-theory theorem proving as a benchmarked AI problem rather than only a collection of isolated prover demonstrations.
Significance rationale: The MPTP Challenge created a large-theory competition setting where systems could exploit complementary AI methods, including learning from previous solutions, over a shared corpus derived from formal mathematics.
